Samsung Galaxy S Plus is an average Smartphone with an average set of hardware specifications. The phone will not be having any official Android 4.0 or 4.1 update due to its hardware limitations but you can easily upgrade it to Gingerbread Android 2.3.6 version as it is officially available. Though this version is available in the form of OTA (Over the Air) update for you but if for any reason you are not able to upgrade it over the air, in this post a manual update process has been explained via which you can have the latest updated firmware for your device and that too the official one from Samsung itself. The firmware build used here is Android 2.3.6 XXXKQD build.  So here is the entire procedure for you.

Pre-Requisites:

  • First of all you should have the latest drivers installed on your computer for the Samsung Galaxy S Plus. These drivers are available easily on the official website or anywhere else on the internet.
  • You should backup all your important data. Although in any OTA update, all your settings and data are preserved, but when you update manually by flashing the firmware in your phone, you tend to lose data such as personalization settings, network settings, Wi-Fi passwords, SMS, contacts etc. You may lose the data, especially from your internal memory. So better make a backup before you go further.
  • Your phone’s battery should be charged to at least 60% in order to ensure that the device stays up during the entire process. If your device turns off in between this process, there might be chances that you may brick your phone. So take care.
  • Also, disable any antivirus or firewalls that are active either on your phone or your PC. Sometimes these applications interfere and do not allow the devices to connect with each other completely.
  • Enable USB debugging on your device. In order to do so, go to Settings -> Applications -> Development and then tick the USB Debugging option.

The Upgrade Procedure:

  • Download the Odin3 v3.04 on your computer and then extract it.
  • Download the upgrade package for Samsung Galaxy S Plus by clicking on here.
  • Extract the above file.
  • Now switch off your phone.
  • Reboot your phone into download mode. In order to do so, while you hold the ‘power’ button to turn it on, simultaneously press the ‘volume down’ button.
  • Once you boot into download mode, connect your phone to your computer using your USB cord. If you do not have the latest drivers installed, they will be installed now automatically. Allow them to be downloaded and installed if required.
  • Once you connect your phone properly, an ‘Added’ option will be highlighted on Odin screen.
  • Also the respective ID: COM box will turn yellow, indicating that your phone has been correctly connected. If that does not happen, try reconnecting and reinstalling the required drivers. Most of the times it is a driver problem.
  • Now in the Odin window, click on the PDA option and then select the file named “I9001XXKQD_I9001ODDKP5_I9001DDKP9_HOME. tar. md5” that you had already downloaded in the initial steps.
  • Once done, click on the ‘start’ option.
  • Let the process to be completed. Do not interfere or use your phone in between.
  • When the process finishes successfully, your phone will be automatically rebooted and you will also see a ‘PASS’ message on the Odin screen.
  • When this happens, you are now allowed to disconnect your phone from your PC and the firmware would now have been updated.
  • In case your phone goes into bootloop, you need to go to the recovery mode and then reset factory settings. That normally fixes any errors like that.

So now, you can easily update your phone to the latest firmware manually in these very simple steps.
